The plot revolves around the team travelling to eastern Congo to find the lost city of Zinj, as all the members of the previous expedition were brutally killed. The novel talks about an aggressive species of grey gorillas that were protecting the lost city of Zinj, and the team had to fight with them. The author has mixed scientific data with action in this novel. The novel was adapted into a film with the same name in the year 1995.
The Andromeda Strain
This 1969 novel was the first one to be written in the author’s own name. It talks about a break of deadly extraterrestrial microorganisms in the forests of Arizona, and as a protocol, they had to activate a wildfire to contain threats of this nature. This novel was somewhat the start of the techno thriller genre. This microorganism kills people by instantaneous blood clotting. The novel talks about bio-weapon technology. Andromeda was the code name of the microbe that mutated with each growth cycle and changed its biological properties each time. The novel is very compelling and is a pleasure to read. The main character is Ahmad Ibn Fadlan who is forced from his relatively easy lifestyle in the Middle East to enter into a war by a group of 12 barbaric heathens to fight against a kingdom full of murderous. 13 warriors were required for that mission and according to an old lady known as the “angel of death” who reads the bones and tells them that the 13th warrior should be a foreigner and hence Ahmad has to enter without his will. Initially, he doesn’t like their living culture with multiple Gods and a lack of writing ability. He finds that very unhygienic, full of violence and much more. But during his stay with these warriors, he finds value in their ways and gets forever changed by his harrowing experiences fighting the eaters of the. Ahmad travels with the northern people to the kingdom of Rothgar.
The author has adopted a very smooth way of writing, which appears very authentic to the time period. Ahmad is able to discover his inner hero, and we also learn that people may appear barbaric and animalistic, but they, too, are vulnerable and have humanity in them. Later, a movie with the name “The 13th Warrior” was made based on this novel, which turned out to be an excellent movie. In short, a well-written and deep novel.
Jurassic Park
Written in 1990, it is one of the best of Michael Crichton’s novels. It’s a sci- fi thriller and talks about the dangers associated with genetic engineering and corporate greed. The main character, Hammond, uses the cloning technology to increase the population of dinosaurs in the resort of Isla Nublar. Though he was cautioned by Dr. Malcolm about the collapse of the park, given the reason that nature is inherently uncontrollable, and whatever technology they have cannot manage the dinosaur population. Crichton writes about a shady multinational company, ITC, that has developed a technology which sends people to the past. Thereafter, the story follows the difficulties they have to face in reaching the past. Their return machine gets damaged, and they are stranded. They had to face the brutal realities of the 14th century, including the Hundred Years’ War and the local battles. In short, the novel was fast-paced, intense and written after thoroughly researching the 14th century to offer the most realistic picture of that time.
